Things to note when using essential oils

Pregnancy
People who are pregnant should always consult a healthcare professional before using any essential oils as everyone is different. Not all essential oils are unsafe to use during pregnancy. In pregnancy, oils are used in half the usual amount. For example, for topical applications via massage, body rubs and bathing only use 1% dilutions. Therefore only use 2 drops of essential oil for every 10ml of base oil.

As a general rule no essential oils should be used topically during the first three months of pregnancy. During the second and third trimesters it is okay to use oils except for the ones listed below.

It is okay to vaporise oils during pregnancy as this can create a relaxing and balancing environment.

Essential oils to avoid topically (on the skin) during pregnancy include:

  • Basil
  • Clary Sage
  • Juniperberry
  • Marjoram
  • Peppermint – in the first four months
  • Rosemary – in the first four months

Skin Sensitivity
Some oils may cause skin irritation in people with very sensitive skins or can cause and allergic reaction. It is very important for those with sensitive skins to do a patch test before using oils topically on the skin.

To do this place one drop of oil onto the inside of the wrist and leave it for 24 hours if no redness or irritation occurs then it is okay to use diluted in a base oil. Usually a reaction can be seen within 15 minutes of applying the oil. If this happens use some base oil to wipe the affected area.
