How are essential oils obtained?

Essential oils are extracted from the various parts of plants via steam distillation.

This basically means that the plant material is placed in a vessel containing water and then heated up to allow the oily material to be released from the plant and then collected in a separate vessel to obtain the essential oil.

While steam distillation is the most common method of extraction, there are also other methods used depending on the material that is being extracted.

For example citrus oils are mainly extracted via cold expression, which means the oil is squeezed out of the fruit rind (fruit peel) and collected. It doesn’t require any heating.

Tranquil Sounds conducts informative free workshops on Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils. If you would like more information, please submit your details and we will contact you with dates and locations.
