What is an essential oil?

Essential oils are made up of hundreds of chemical constituents that give the oil its unique properties.

An essential oil, interestingly enough, is not essential to the life of the plant, which means the plant does not require the essential oil for metabolic processes.

The word essential means that the oil is volatile at room temperature. This means that essential oils evaporate at room temperature.

Essential oils that have a high evaporation rate i.e. that evaporate quickly are referred to as ‘top’ note oils and the ones that have a slow evaporation rate i.e. that evaporate slowly are referred to as ‘base’ note oils.

The oils with an evaporation rate in between are referred to as ‘middle’ note oils. This is very important when blending oils for their aroma and for perfumery.

Essential oils have aromas ranging from fresh citrus tones to light floral tones and heavy herby tones.
